EventID 1001 DHCP Your computer was not assigned an address from the network

I get the following occasional DHcp-client error event 1001 in my events viewer 10/06/2014 03:45:39

Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0x20107A27442C.  The following error occurred: 0x79. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.

plus almost at the same time 10/06/2014 03:44:02

I get event error 7023 Service control manager

The Server service terminated with the following error:

Not enough storage is available to complete this operation.

Tried to locate the problem by researching the forum.  What does this HWaddrees 20107A27442C for?

Is there a solution to hand that anyone can suggest.

Steps to disable and enable the virtual Wi-Fi miniport.

One new feature of the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system is the virtual Wi-Fi miniport adapter. This adapter is utilized for software access point connections and may not initially show up in the Network Connections page in Windows 7. However, the adapter is installed and enabled, by default, when Windows 7 is installed. To disable the virtual Wi-Fi miniport adapter, first you make Windows 7 recognize and list the device in Network Connections, and then you will be able to disable the device.

1. Click the Windows "Start" button and click the "Control Panel" link.

2. Click the "Network and Internet" option.

3. Click "Add a Wireless Device." Windows will detect the virtual device and list it as an additional wireless network adapter.

4. Right-click on the new entry for the "Virtual Wi-Fi Miniport Adapter" and select "Disable" from the context menu. The adapter is disabled.

A DHCP error means the server on your network that provides an Internet Protocol address for devices isn't able to assign your computer an IP address . Because the DHCP setting can break the internet connection, the error can appear in many forms, but the end result is that you can't access the internet.

Instructions in this article apply to all Windows 10 PCs.

Causes of DHCP Errors

Two things can cause a DHCP error. One is the configuration on the computer or device that allows a DHCP server to assign it an IP. The other is the configuration of the DHCP server.

DHCP errors occur when the DHCP server or router on a network cannot automatically adjust the device's IP address to join the network. This results in a network connection error when you access the internet with a web browser.

What makes DHCP errors so difficult to troubleshoot is that the error message doesn't always include any mention of DHCP.

How to Fix DHCP Errors

Try these steps until the DHCP error is resolved:

Run the Windows Network Troubleshooter . The easiest way to fix internet connection issues is by letting Windows automatically fix the internet settings. Right-click the network connection icon in the Windows taskbar and select Troubleshoot problems . The network troubleshooter identifies any settings that may cause an internet connection problem. If the DHCP settings caused the error, select Apply this fix to apply any suggested changes.

Check the DHCP adapter settings . The DHCP server or router on the network should automatically assign the computer an IP address by default. Still, this option can be disabled, so look in the network adapter settings to make sure it's enabled.

Check the DHCP router settings. On a home network, DHCP settings in the router manage the IP addresses of devices on the network. Verify that the DHCP beginning and ending addresses match the gateway address .

Contact IT support. On a typical corporate network, a DNS server manages the IP address of devices on the network. All DHCP settings are managed by an IT department. When you have network connection issues, contact your IT help desk.

The easiest way to fix this is to change the IP type from dynamic to static . Go to Settings > WiFi > press and hold the network you are connected to and select Modify Network . Select Show advanced > Set IP Settings to Static .

The most common reason for a DHCP failure is an outdated OS on your Chromebook. To check for updates , go to Time > Settings > About Chrome OS > Check for Updates .

Windows 7 WiFi - Limited access - DHCP client can't obtain IP address

since few days I cannot properly connect to ANY wifi (work, in public or to my home wifi). Whenever I try to connects, Windows shows a limited availability message. Other devices are able to connect to the same router, only my laptop can't. So - that rules out router configuration issue.

After connecting to wifi and doing ipconfig /all I see following information:

so, because assigned address is link-local, I understand that Windows was not able contact DHCP server that sits on my wifi router.

Both DHCP client and WLAN autoconfiguration services are enabled, but in the log I see following error:

Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0xAEFDCEE6BF0E. The following error occurred: 0x79. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.

This error allowed me to trace that I have TWO adapters with the same MAC, one physical and one virtual:

I disable the virtual one with (using commands from this article: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd815243%28VS.85%29.aspx and https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/eventid-1001-dhcp-your-computer-was-not-assigned/2b5227e0-8171-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5 ) - it didn't helped, still can't connect to any wifi.

Drivers were reinstalled, laptop rebooted many times. I use Virtual Box if that somehow important (it creates some additional virtual devices).

Anyone have any hints on how to proceed? What could I check more?

It is the other way around, Because Windows cannot/don't contact a DHCP server, your IP address is link-local. –  user477799 Apr 1, 2017 at 1:47
  • The Miniport Adapter is only important for sharing your wireless connection as hotspot. I don't believe this is the problem, but to disable it, go to the command prompt as admin and type this: netsh wlan stop hostednetwork followed by netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=disallow . You could also disable IPv6 on the main adapter, as it's not needed for a home network. –  harrymc Apr 15, 2017 at 9:30

  • Great question, @Twisty. That will help answer a bunch of remaining questions. (e.g., does the Wi-Fi equipment in the laptop work? There is many possible solutions:

  • completely disable or uninstal AV firewall, reinstall network drivers, and test - I see frequently problems with WiFi after AV firewal bug - if it help, then reinstall AV
  • test your network interface - connect to network, set static IP and ping gate

check services status - run services.msc, find:

  • WLAN AutoConfig Service
  • dhcp client service

Try stop and start, these services should be set to start automaticity.

  • 'Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter' - go to devices manager, disable this network card and tray reconnect to WiFi
  • install newest drivers for Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260
  • check system event log, find errors and dhcp client logs

It's a try.

Using a live-linux-distro to see if the hardware works properly.

Or manually resetting the TCP/IP protocol as follows:

Run cmd.exe as Administrator

Type, netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt (or use your preferred file path)

Restart your computer

Or using an easy-fix from here

You could try to use another easy-fix too, if the first doesn't work.

You do not have 2 mac address that are the same they are both different:

To test if it is your router plug your computer directly into the router. Do an ipconfig and see if you get an IP address from the default gateway. If you still do not get an IP depending on your connection type, if it is PPPoE connect your computer directly into the wall and dial the connection manually from your network and sharing center. If your direct IP get the IP address assigned to your router and inset the static ip into your wireless lan adaptor.

If your using VDSL, ADSL1 or 2 or any other phone line connection you will need to replace your modem to eliminate if its the modem but before doing this I would plug a different computer into the router/modem to see if it replicates the issue of not receiving the ip address.

If non of this resolves your issue then you most likly have an issue at your node and i would contact your ISP and get them to send out a tech, hope this helps.

Reasons for DHCP error 0x79 to occur

Before we get into the solution part of this error, let’s see the reasons for this error to occur.

  • This error indicates that you have a predefined IP address on the computer and your device has assigned this IP address to some other device.
  • The IP address is beyond the scope of the DHCP range.

For instance, the error appears as below.

Now let’s see the solution our Support Engineers provide to our customers to get rid of this error message.

1. First, make sure to check the DHCP range on the router. Also, verify that the computer is set to obtain an address automatically.

2. Try to disable the Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) on the network adapter. Here are the steps for doing it.

  • First, right-click on the Network icon in the System Tray and click on Network and Sharing Center.
  • Next, click on Change Adapter Settings.
  • After that, right-click on Network Adapter and Choose ‘Properties’.
  • Then uncheck “Internet Protocol Version 6”.
  • Finally, click on OK.

3. Try unplugging the LAN cable and wireless connection

  • First, go to “Ethernet Adapter local area connection 2” properties.
  • Next, select the “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)”.
  • Now click on the Properties button.
  • Then, select the “Use the following IP address:” option and set the below IPs IP=192.1xx.1.10 subnet mask=255.255.255.0 default gateway = your router IP address such as 192.1xx.1.1
  • After that, from the second section, select “Use the following DNS server addresses:” set “PreferAlternate DNS server:” your router default IP for example 192.168.1.1
  • Finally, click on OK and try to connect through the LAN and then wireless.

4. You can also try disabling Wireless Connection #2 (Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adaptor) network adapter. You can find this by comparing the MAC address listed in the error message with the output of CMD>ipconfig /all.

5. Also, check the DHCP “lease” time of the router and make sure it is set as high as it can go.

6. services.mscLocate the DHCP Client service, so make sure that it is Started and the Startup Type is set to Automatic. In case, if the service is already Started then try to stop it and restart it.

7. Click on Start >> Programs >> Accessories >> right-click on Command Prompt, select “Run as Administrator” to open a command prompt. Then in the Command Prompt, execute the following commands one after the other.

I carefully followed your procedure, but I still get the same error message in the event manager. With ipv6 enabled, I can only get to parts of the internet. (after disabling ipv6 in the adapter, mentioned above, no access). In HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces, when I get a new entry, it has DhcpIPAddress 0.0.0.0, the DhcpServer is all 255s, and the subnet mask is 255.0.0.0. On a good machine, the addresses are as expected from my AT&T (Arris) router. (I factory reset the router, have re-installed my adapter SW and have two D-link adapters. so it’s not the router and not the adapter). I believe something is corrupted in the registry of this particular computer. It’s unable to get an IP from the router’s DHCP. Nothing I’ve tried restores it, and I don’t have a usable registry backup. Is there some limited set of keys that could be copied from a good machine to the one I have trouble with? Which keys would reset all the networking stuff and not mess up anything else?

Hello I hope you guys can help me, sorry this is very long and clueless. I am not techy at all. I have 2 PC's connected via ethernet cable to a router provided by my ISP (Orange Livebox). One PC has Windows XP (hubby's) and one has Windows 7 (mine). Until about 2 weeks ago both PC's were working fine and no internet connection problems. We lost our connection one Friday night along with thousands of other people in our area. It was fixed on Saturday but ever since then my PC has been dropping it's internet connection but my husband's PC is working normally. My internet connection drops and will only come back on if I unplug the router and leave it off for a minute then plug it back in. Connection then works for a few hours (usually up to 7 or 8 hours) before dropping again. I get this error in the Event Viewer when it happens: "Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP server) for the network card with network address xxlong number herexx. the following error occurred: 0x79. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on it's own from the network address (DHCP) server." Have contacted the ISP "support" who sent a new Livebox and ethernet cables. I thought this had worked but lost the connection again the next day. Phoned them again and they say they will test the line and get back to me (they also said this last time). They are useless and I would change ISP but my husband is the account holder and his PC is fine, so.... When I installed the new router it came with a CD which worked on my PC, but wouldn't play on XP so hubby's PC is working OK but has no software for the new router. I have tried to access the configuration pages from his PC but it won't work (pages open very slowly and config parts are missing). So far I have tried without success: changing ethernet cables for known working ones opening up PC case and checking network adapter isn't loose ipconfig /release and renew, which gives an error message when I try to renew the winsock fix that starts with netsh something (sorry can't remember it all and am not on my own PC obv.) checking for newer driver for network adapter (windows says I already have it) Device Manager shows no problems with anything. Sorry this is so long, but I have been trying various things for nearly 2 weeks now. My useless ISP support have asked me not to re-start my router until they finish "checking the line" so I am using hubby's PC when i get the chance. He will not stand for me turning the router off and on at night as he plays poker and doesn't want his PC disconnected. I have tried turning off the firewall too, but now have Windows telling me that my anti-virus app is managing the firewall even though I've asked it to turn off. I don't actually know if it's on or off at the moment. This is a 6 month old Dell machine and has McAffee which I don't really understand how to use. I have been fiddling with the network settings in desperation and have no doubt caused more problems for myself, but can't seem to find anyone at my ISP support who can help. I'm frustrated beyond belief by this! There are other error messages too, mostly DHCP and DNS stuff. I have tried to manually enter these settings but nothing changed (not sure if I did it right though) and also this new router seems to have different settings to the old one, but as I can't access the configuration pages for it, I could be wrong. Press the Windows key + R to open a Run box. Type services.msc Click OK. Locate the DHCP Client service. Double-click it. Make sure it's Started and the Startup Type is set to Automatic . If the service is already Started, try Stopping and Restarting it.  

Try rebooting the computer. If no luck, Try the following (again if you have already tried it): Click Start > Programs > Accessories > right-click on Command Prompt , select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt. In the Command Prompt, type in the bold text, one command after the other, pressing Enter between each of them: Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults: netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults: netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log Reboot the computer.

Back again. I did all those netsh commands and got OK's until I got to the ipv6 one, it said "There's no user specified settings to be reset". That was in the cmd window itself, not the Event Viewer. I re-booted after but no change to my connection. If my ISP doesn't get back to me by tomorrow evening I'm going to re-start the router again to get some internet access. It's too inconvenient to keep trying to use this machine when my husband is using it. It's 11pm here now and I've got an early start tomorrow so we're off to bed shortly. If I had internet access, would it make troubleshooting harder?

How to Access Router Settings With No Internet Connection ​  

Can't access the pages on my PC. Firefox says server not found, IE says Cannot Display Page. On hubby's PC I finally got access, but it was so slow I thought it was about to crash. Under Network configuration it says DHCP Enabled. The settings for ADSL and Network are different addresses, is that right?  

I cut and pasted these settings from the router pages: Network Enable DHCP Server: Enabled LAN IP address: 192.168.1.1 Broadcast LAN IP address: 192.168.1.255 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 DHCP start address: 192.168.1.9 DHCP server end address 192.168.1.200 ADSL WAN IP address: 95.145.56.185 Gateway: 217.47.207.250 Primary DNS server: 193.36.79.101 Secondary DNS server 193.36.79.100 I also noticed under "Dynamic DNS" it says "Server Status: Off". Is that right?  

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling your network adapter driver?

Good night! If that doesn't help, you can try swapping network adapters to rule out failure.  

Make sure the DNS Client service is Started and Automatic . If no luck, Try using Google Public DNS in your router (if possible) and computer. Or, OpenDNS .  

Hello again. Well I got about 11 or 12 hours altogether from that last connection. It finally dropped this afternoon with the usual message about IP address not assigned and the other one that says DNS server not responding. It's on again now that I've unplugged/re-plugged the router. Will I have to get a new network adapter? Would this one work? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-Gigab...1_4?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1290354138&sr=1-4 It says it needs a PCIe slot, how do I find out if I've got one? (I know I have PCI slots but I don't know what the "e" means). Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask.

DHCP failover can not work properly

I have a test DHCP failover environment with two DHCP server (DHCP1 and DHCP2). One client could obtain an IP address from DHCP1. When I make a failover which means I shut down the DHCP1 (that is the server which assign an IP to my client.) After the DHCP1 shut down, the DHCP2 couldn't control over the active lease and the scope. When the lease time is run out, the DHCP2 couldn't renew the lease, the client is disconnecting from network, discard the IP address and cannot obtain IP from DHCP2. The ipconfig /release and /renew not working.

The test environment: Lease time: 10 minutes Switchover time: 60 minutes MCLT: 5 minutes

I try to reboot the client and restart the DHCP service on DHCP2, but the problem is still being.

Which failover mode did you configure? Load Balance Mode or Hot Standby Mode?

Please first check event log to see if there are something related for us to troubleshooting.

When you run IPconfig /renew, will it post any error message?

I use Load Balance mode. There is nothing which is related to this issue in event log. When I run ipconfig /renew on client, this is the error message after short time:

An error occured while renewing interface Ethernet0: unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.

Delete failover relationship and re-configure failover relationship again, check if the issue still occurs.

If client still cannot obtain IP address from DHCP2, then we need to monitor DHCP packets to narrow down the issue. Check if DHCP client broadcast the lease renew request, whether DHCP2 receives the lease request and responds with a DHCPACK.

Thank You. I tried your suggestion. remove the failover and tested the two DHCP server independently. Both DHCP server can serve with IP address to the client. After it, I reconfigured the failover relationship, and the problem is still valid. The client doesn't renew the IP address from the online DHCP2 server.

I found the following error on the client's DHCP event, when the lease is expired: Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0xF4B7E22D8721. The following error occurred: 0x79.

It seems that the client want to obtain the renewal process from the DHCP1 (which is offline).

When I configure a static IP address, I can ping the DHCP2, and when I configure the client to obtain IP address automatically, the online DHCP2 server can not give IP address.

When I disable and enable the client's network adapter, the client can obtain IP address from DHCP 2 successfully. Why? It is not realistic in production environment...

This is not a normal phenomenon. Let's try to narrow down the issue.

What's the OS version of your windows clients?

Did you have other windows clients? Change to the other windows clients and check again, see if the issue still occurs. If other windows clients can obtain IP successfully, then this problem should be more related with your client machine.

Yes, I think it is an abnormal too.

The client is Windows 10 Pro 64bit 1909 (virtual machine). I tried the different client and the problem is same too. The two DHCP (DHCP1 and DHCP2) are online. The new client can obtain an IP address. I checked which was the DHCP server to give IP address with ipconfig /all. That was the DHCP2. I disable the network adapter of the DHCP2 and wait to expire the lease. The lease cannot renew on the DHCP1.

This is the last log in the event viewer which is related to the DHCP failover service: The DHCP server DHCP1.domain.net has transitioned to a PARTNER DOWN state for the failover relationship DHCP2.domain.net DHCP1.domain.net and the MCLT period of 300 seconds has expired. The server has taken over the free IP address pool of the partner server DHCP2.domain.net for all scopes which are part of the failover relationship.

ipconfig /renew can't obtain IP address from DHCP1.

I don't understand the MS DHCP failover, it mean it isn't failover...

This is not normal. When you run ipconfig /renew or lease was expired, client should obtain IP address from DHCP partner immediately.

I want to share with you my current situations. I reproduced the same symptom in my Hyper-V VM. Stop DHCP1 service, client cannot obtain IP from DHCP2 even run Ipconfig /release & renew or lease expired. I must disable and re-enable client's adapter then DHCP clients can obtain IP address from DHCP2. It's a bit strange, because it can work normally before. I will do more research, please give me more time.

You are lucky! Re-enable my client's network adapter isn't enough for me. I have to restart the DHCP service on the online DHCP server (in my test environment is DHCP1). When I restart the DHCP service, I have to re-enable the client's network adapter, and the client can obtain IP address from DHCP1. I am sad by this workaround. :(

are you sure it's not a router? our internet has the cable entering the modem/router.. then ethernet cable connecting to web. if it is a router.. there could be a bad setting/configuration. lookup the model and how to reset to factory default. usually you push down the power for like 30 seconds. Though- if you go to the routers config page-- assuming it's arouter-- you can reset through your web browser. to do so.. go to start, type in the search bar cmd .. then run. type in ipconfig . now enter the "default gateway" into your browser. usually something like 192.168.1.1. also.. have you considered maybe a bad ethernet cable?

I have no router or modem and they changed the cable as i said on the first post  

hey. how do you not have a modem? what kind of internet is it? edit: even if it's coming directly out the wall, there must be a modem somewhere in the location (if it's an office, apartment or 2 family house). assuming it's an integrated port on mobo.. unless the port on your new mobo got damaged.. and they changed wire and tested signal strength.. would have to be a router issue, from wherever you're getting your signal.

About a month ago, I started waiting and waiting for my computer to connect to the internet at boot up. When I checked event viewer, this is the error message I see, "Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0xE03F497D2563. The following error occurred: 0x79. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server." After anywhere from 45 seconds to a minute, my computer will finally connect and will run normally.

I downloaded Piriform Speccy and checked the network tab and here is what it says:

Does anyone that knows what they are looking for see anyhting amiss in that list?

On my side, I am running Win 7 64 bit SP1, with a Comcast Cable Modem and  a EA4500 Cisco Router. I have tried changng to a static IP address and both OpenDNS and Google DNS addresses. No change. I intalled new CAT5E cables; no change.

Ideas? I have googled and see nothing relevant, although it seems to be a common problem, with many suggestions, but none have worked for me.

Is your default gateway the cable modem or the router? I'd start there. The DHCP service on your modem/gateway is slow for some reason.

You might also want to doublecheck and make sure the DHCP client service is running and set to automatic on your computer.

I think it is the router. DHCP clinet service is set to auto and runs at startup.

Open up a web browser and type in the default gateway IP address. Log in with the credentials you configured, and in the admin panel, under Router Settings, click Connectivity. On the Local Network tab, make sure the DHCP server is enabled, and check to make sure the range of DHCP addresses matches the network address of your default gateway -- 192.168.1.x.

Have you set up a DHCP reservation for your computer? If so, try deleting it.

Also, try connecting another laptop/computer to the router and see if it also takes a long time to be assigned an IP address.

Did the laptop take a while to obtain an address, or was it quicker?

Same thing; slow to connect; about 45 sec. to 1 minute.

Can you try connecting the laptop using WiFi and if it takes that long using wireless?

Slightly quicker - maybe 30 seconds instead of 45 seconds. No error messages in Event Viewer realted to that DHCP message on the desktop.

If the settings on the router are correct, you may need to troubleshoot this with Cisco. The DHCP on the router is taking too long to hand out an IP address.

I set up the router using the Linksys Wifi software and everything was by default, so the router could be the culprit; I have read about some issues with the ea4500. What might you suggest for a replacement brand or Cisco model?

I think the dhcp is a side track.  I would be more concerned about the 0 bps.  Might want to try a different network cord or different Ethernet nic.
