know your pack

1)    how does the postpaid international roaming pack work how do i know what is the pack benefit in the country i travel to.

Vi has the simplest structure for International Roaming packs. One pack works across more than 100 countries. So, you don’t need to buy different packs for different countries.

The Pack benefits vary as per the country you travel to and depending on whether you are using a postpaid number or a prepaid.

Vi’s best International Roaming plans spanning more than 100 countries are divided into 2 categories:

  • Unlimited Countries – You get  Unlimited Data & Calls in these countries if you are on a pack.

For exact benefits, go to the International Roaming section on the  Vi app or website, choose the country you are traveling to and check the applicable benefits. You also get the necessary information on the applicable benefits through SMS as soon as you land in any foreign country

  • Non-Unlimited or Discounted Countries – You will get a fixed quota for usage in these countries.

The exact benefits will depend on the pack you have purchased.

  • Non-Pack countries – Vi Roaming Packs are not applicable in these countries and you will be charged at Standard Roaming rates here even if you purchase an International Roaming plan.

2)    What if the country I am traveling to is not covered under the Roaming plan?

You will be charged the standard roaming rates for these countries. For country wise standard roaming rates refer to the Terms & Conditions Page

3)    How do I know applicable tariffs in various countries that I travel to?

If you have taken an International Roaming Plan then you will be charged as per the tariffs/benefits of your pack for that country.

In case you have International Roaming Services active and have not taken any International Roaming Plan then you will be charged as per the Standard Rates applicable in the country you are traveling to.

Look out for the SMS you receive upon landing in a foreign country (you get these only if the International Roaming service is active on your Vi number). Alternatively, you can go to the International Roaming section on Vi app or website and search for the country you are traveling to and know the applicable charges.

To know the Standard Roaming Rates applicable in a particular country, refer to the Standard Roaming Rates Section and select a plan from the best International Roaming Plans by Vi.

4)    Can I choose an International Roaming Plan for only the number of days I am traveling?

Yes. We have different packs to suit all kinds of trips – 1-day / 10-day packs for short trips and  14-day / 30-day packs for longer travel. Choose the plan that best suits your needs.

5)    What are the charges applicable for using voice, text, and data while traveling abroad?

Vi offers the best international roaming plans with free data, free SMS, free incoming calls, and free outgoing calls. Charges will apply depending on the Roaming pack that you choose.

For further details related to Postpaid & Prepaid International Roaming please enter your number on the International Roaming Page, and select from the best international roaming plans that suit all your needs.

6)    I am a REDX customer. How do I claim the FREE IR pack on my Red X Plan?

You can claim your IR Pack benefit by going to the “Plan Benefits” section on the homepage of the Vi App . You can activate the inbuilt 7 days pack worth Rs.2999 without any extra cost or you can even give a future date request to activate the pack for a future date as per your travel plan.

7)    If I have taken an International Roaming Pack, do I need to deactivate it after I return to India?

No. All our International Roaming packs are for fixed validity. These expire as soon as the validity is over. You do not need to deactivate the packs at all.

8)    If I do not deactivate my International Roaming Pack/Service after returning to India, will I continue to get charged for it?

International Roaming Service continues to remain active on your number even after you return and will be billed as per your bill cycle. You can log into the Vi App to check if the service is active on your number or not. You need to select the Deactivate option if you wish to deactivate this service. Please take note that this service doesn’t auto-activate and you’ll have to reactivate International Roaming Service on your number if you intend to use it again while traveling.

9)    Why am I billed for roaming even when I have not visited any roaming location in the last billing period?

Roaming usages are billed as per data received from the International Operators on whose network you would have used your mobile while in that country. This data is received up to 30 days from the time of usage. In case of delay in receiving such data files from the International Operators, usages made in a particular bill period may reflect in the succeeding bill period.

international roaming service

1)    what is international roaming.

International roaming is a service that enables mobile users to make and receive voice calls or text messages while visiting another country. Roaming service extends the operator’s coverage to allow usage of the home operator’s mobile number and network services within a foreign country. Traveling abroad with Vi’s best international roaming plan is effortless as Vi offers customized plans based on your travel destination and the duration of your trip.

2)    Can I use my phone in a foreign country, if I do not buy a pack?

You can use your phone in a foreign country, without an International Roaming pack, as long as you have activated the International Roaming service on your mobile. Using an International Roaming pack you can avoid unexpected bills as you will be charged as per the standard rates. Browse and choose the best international roaming plan to stay connected.

Here is how to activate International Roaming:

For prepaid customers from Kolkata, West Bengal, Orissa & Bihar circles, International Roaming Services need to be activated before traveling by sending ACT IR as SMS to 144 (toll-free).

For Prepaid customers from all other circles, the International Roaming service is pre-activated.

Postpaid users need to activate the International Roaming service before leaving the country.

3)    I am a postpaid user, how am I protected against high bills on International Roaming?

Your bill depends on how and how much you use your phone abroad. If you have not taken any International Roaming plan and use your phone normally as you do in India, there is a high chance of you getting a very high bill. It is, therefore, advisable to use your phone on International Roaming only with a pack. You can now safeguard yourself from high bills by choosing from the best international roaming plans.

However, we have some safety measures in place to prevent high bills for any unconscious usage.

  • RoamSafe : To safeguard you from accidental data usage in a foreign country, thereby resulting in high data charges, your mobile internet will be kept deactivated, if you travel without a pack or if you travel to a country where our packs are not applicable. If you still wish to use the internet on your mobile, at the applicable standard roaming rates you can send the SMS ACT IRDATA to 199. This service will remain active for 7 Days and gets automatically deactivated after 7 Days. You can renew this service after every 7 Days by sending the SMS ACT IRDATA to 199.

However, we strictly advise NOT to use mobile internet abroad without an International Roaming recharge. If you decide not to take a pack, use a local wi-fi.

Once the data service has been made active, it will remain ON unless a customer specifically deactivates the data service again.

To deactivate data service again, send the SMS: CAN IRDATA to 199

  • Always on: For pack users, we have an additional safeguard with the ‘Always-On’ feature to protect them from high International Roaming Charges for any usage after pack expiry. For eg, if you have taken a 10-day pack and you continue to use your phone on International Roaming even after the 10 days are over (you will get an intimation upon your pack expiry), you just get charged for the Daily Roaming pack @ Rs 749 and your entire usage is treated as pack usage, thereby saving you from any high bill basis standard rates.
  • Special Rates post Pack Quota: This is another safeguard for the pack users. If you finish your pack quota, you get special rates (>95% discount vs standard rates) for usage on International Roaming >> Rs3/min for incoming and outgoing local calls & calls back to India; Rs1/MB for data usage & Re1/SMS.

Lastly, we would recommend that you should always purchase an International Roaming pack for using your phone in a foreign country. Get worry-free with a pack, without worrying about any high bills. Browse from the best international roaming plans and select a pack that matches your travel requirements.

4)    How can I use my Vi mobile in a foreign country i.e. on International Roaming?

  • To use your Vi mobile in a foreign country, you need to activate the International Roaming service on your mobile before you leave India
  • International Roaming service allows you to use your phone in a foreign country. However, all the usage is charged as per applicable standard International Roaming rates. These rates differ from country to country. Given below is the range for the rates for various types of usage

o   Incoming Calls: Rs 30/min to Rs 315/min

o   Outgoing Calls: Rs 21/min to Rs 399/min

o   Data Usage: Rs 563/MB to Rs 1536/MB

o   Outgoing SMS: Rs 15/SMS to Rs25/SMS

  • To use your phone freely in a foreign country without worrying about high bills, it is advisable to purchase an International Roaming Pack. With the best international roaming plan, you can get Unlimited Free Data & Calls in most of the popular countries. Our best international roaming plans cover more than 100 countries and we have packs to suit all kinds of trips – short stays or longer holidays abroad.
  • If you plan to purchase an International Roaming pack, then you do not need to activate the International Roaming service separately.

To activate International Roaming Service or Pack, you can simply go to the International Roaming section on the  Vi app or our website  www.myvi.in for more details mentioned below.

5)    Can I use the same handset & SIM while traveling outside India?

Yes, you can use the same handset & SIM in any foreign country. Only if you are using a very old handset model or a non-4G handset, which may not be compatible with the available networks in some of the countries, you may need to change your handset. Eg. many countries have only 4G networks, so your handset should be 4G compatible to be used in that country.

6)    What happens after my pack expires?

Vi Prepaid customers will be charged at standard roaming rates once the international roaming plan expires.

Vi Postpaid customers have superior benefits on the pack as all our postpaid Roaming Packs come with the ‘Always-On’ feature. This feature remains active on your number and protects you from high international roaming charges when you use your mobile number for making or receiving calls or while using your mobile internet. This service will remain active even after you return to India but No charges would be incurred when in India. The “Always On” feature has a validity of 3 years once it gets activated.

7)    10 Digit customer care number?

Calls from abroad back to India on the 10 Digit Customer Care number are toll-free and you will not be charged for the calls but do note that since it is an Outgoing call, you will be charged Rs.99 if you are a prepaid subscriber without any International Roaming Pack or charged for Always-On for that day.

8)    How do I select Network when I reach another country?

You should be able to automatically connect to our Partner Networks whilst roaming. Should you face any connectivity issues, please do a manual selection through the Handset Settings on your mobile, ensure your Data Roaming is switched On.

9)    How do I know which operator to select whilst roaming?

Once in the Roaming Location, you will be automatically connected to our Partner Network if you have taken the International Roaming Service or an International Roaming Plan.

10)    How to make voice calls once I reach another country?

To make voice calls from overseas, dial the number with the area code as you would do when in India. To call another country, dial + with the country code followed by the phone number.

For example, to call someone in India while traveling abroad, just add India’s country code +91 as a prefix and enter the number i.e. +9198110XXXXX

11)    Can I use my free data quota on my Postpaid Plan or Prepaid Plan on International Roaming?

No, any in-built data quota on your  postpaid plans  or  prepaid plans is not valid for usage outside of India. For International Roaming, you need to buy separate roaming packs. Vi offers a variety of best international roaming plans with validity ranging from 1-day for temporary usage to 30-days for longer trips.

12)    Will I be charged for incoming messages while on International Roaming?

NO. Incoming SMS on International Roaming is not charged. However, incoming calls are chargeable on International Roaming.

13)    I’m unable to receive calls whilst roaming abroad

Do make sure Call Forwarding is disabled (If, not required).

14)    I’m unable to receive SMS whilst roaming abroad

Once connected to the Network, you will be able to send or receive SMS seamlessly. In case you are unable to receive SMS; do restart your handset as it will enable you to connect with the Partner Network.

15)    I’m unable to use Data Services or connect to 4G whilst Roaming?

Check your Handset Settings; international Data Roaming should be enabled.

Also, check for 3G and 4G settings on your Mobile Data option, which should be enabled to connect to Data services at your roaming location

16)    If I have not taken an International Roaming pack can I use mobile internet?

Our in-built feature called RoamSafe safeguards you from accidental data usage in a foreign country, thereby resulting in high data charges. Your mobile internet will be kept deactivated, if you travel without a pack or if you travel to a country where our packs are not applicable. If you still wish to use the internet on your mobile, at the applicable standard roaming rates, you can send the SMS ACT IRDATA to 199. This service will remain active for 7 Days and gets automatically deactivated after 7 Days. You can renew this service after every 7 Days by sending the SMS ACT IRDATA to 199.

However, we strictly advise NOT to use mobile internet abroad without an international pack. Either use a local Wi-Fi or choose a pack from the best international roaming plans available for always staying connected.

Once the data service has been made active, it will remain ON unless a customer specifically deactivates the data service again. To deactivate the data service (or to re-activate RoamSafe), send the SMS: CAN IRDATA to 199.

17)    When does my International Roaming Pack expire?

All pack activations are based on Indian Standard Time (IST) and are applicable until pack validity. (Calculated as 1 day = 24 Hrs from time of activation of the pack).

For e.g. If you have requested for a Rs 3999 pack for 10 days at 15:00 Hrs IST on the 1st of Oct, you start availing pack benefits immediately on receipt of the activation confirmation SMS (approx. 30 mins after request). So your pack benefits will be valid till 14:59 Hrs IST on the 11th of Oct. Post 11th Oct, if you are still in one of the pack countries, and without a pack, the ‘Always ON’ feature will get activated automatically. You may refer to the International Roaming Tab on Vi App  or  www.myvi.in  to view the Active International Roaming Pack/Service on your Vi number.

18)    How do I check the Data Quota left on my International Roaming Pack?

You can check the data quota of your International Roaming Pack on My Vi App or  www.myvi.in

19)    Tips on optimizing your mobile internet usage?

If you have online applications on your device, remember that data usage occurs throughout the day; hence usage will be billed accordingly.

Smart devices tend to continuously access data networks and automatically download some updates for certain applications like Weather, Stock/News alerts, social networking sites (Twitter, Facebook), and emails. Hence it is recommended, you disable data on your handset to avoid unnecessary charges by Switching off the settings.

Alternatively, check your handset menu to switch off data settings or auto-updates. It is advisable to log out properly before terminating a surfing session thus ensuring unnecessary data transfer is avoided.

Vodafone roaming explained for international & EU countries

Vodafone roaming - International roaming with Vodafone explained

You can roam in most countries around the world with Vodafone.

However, since 31 January 2022, some customers may have to pay to continue using their allowance in Europe.

If you joined Vodafone before 11 August 2021, and you haven’t upgraded or renewed since, you can continue to enjoy free EU roaming.

If you’re on a 3 Xtra benefits plan, you can continue to roam for free within 51 EU destinations, regardless of when you joined Vodafone. Some 3 Xtra benefits plans also include international roaming, for a total of 83 destinations.

If you joined or upgraded on or after 11 August 2021, and you’re not on a 3 Xtra benefits plan, you will have to pay for £2.25 per day to use your allowance within the EU.

Vodafone EU roaming - after Brexit

From 31 January 2022, you may have to pay to use your allowance within the EU, depending on the type of plan you have and when your contract started.

Regardless of when you joined Vodafone or the type of plan you have, roaming will continue to be free in 4 destinations: Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man, Iceland and Norway.

If your pay monthly contract started before 11th August 2021, and you haven't upgraded or renewed your contract since, you can continue to roam in the EU free of charge, regardless of your plan.

However, if joined Vodafone or upgraded your plan on or after 11 August 2021, you may have to pay to use your allowance within the EU, depending on the type of plan you have.

You can continue to use your allowance for free in the EU (51 destinations) with any 3 Xtra benefits plan. Some 3 Xtra benefits plans also come with additional international destinations, for a total of 83 roaming destinations

For any other plan, you will have to pay to use your allowance within the EU:

  • £2.25 per day (automatically charged)
  • £10 for 8 days (text 8DAYEUROPE to 40506)
  • £15 for 15 days (text 15DAYEUROPE to 40506)

For existing customers who do not upgrade or change their contract, you may still have free EU roaming included with your plan, even if the new rules state otherwise:

  • Any plan started before 11 August 2021 (Zone B)
  • Unlimited Max plan started between 12 July 2019 and 14 June 2021 (Zone B and C)
  • Red Entertainment Plan started between 4 September 2018 and 11 July 2019 (Zone B and C)

However, the moment you upgrade your contract or change your plan, the new rules will apply, and you may no longer be eligible for free EU roaming.

Whenever you upgrade, change or renew your plan, talk to Vodafone if you're unsure if you will have to start paying for EU roaming.

You cannot use your regular allowance in any country outside the UK with a Vodafone Basic plan.

Instead, you will be charged at a premium out of tariff rate.

We don’t recommend you roam outside the UK if you have a Vodafone Basics Plan, as the rate is expensive. You should consider switching your plan or purchasing a local SIM card.

Vodafone international roaming FAQ

Nick Baker, Broadband and TV expert

Vodafone's roaming policy depends on which plan you sign up for, as each has varying levels of roaming included, if any.

If your Vodafone Pay monthly plan started before 11 August 2021, then you'll likely still have EU roaming included in your monthly price without having to add any extras. However, if you joined Vodafone, upgraded, or changed your plan on or after 11 August 2021, there will likely be a daily charge for using your phone in Vodafone's European roaming zones.

However, if you have an Xtra 3 plan or one of the selected Unlimited Max Xtra 3 plans, you'll have either EU roaming or worldwide roaming included.

Vodafone returns to growth after cost cuts, as Three merger talks continue

Vodafone has returned to growth across its key markets as it presses on with a turnaround process and waits for a decision from regulators on a potential merger with Three UK.

The telecoms giant said it was making progress on a restructuring plan which has included selling off its underperforming Italian and Spanish businesses and cutting thousands of jobs.

Vodafone said service revenue grew 6.3% to 29.9 billion euros (£25.7 billion) in the year ending March 31.

Overall revenue and operating profit dropped after several business sales inflated figures in the previous year.

Much more still needs to be done in the year ahead

It is about halfway through a job cuts programme which will eventually see it make 11,000 people redundant across the entire business, as previously announced.

Chief executive Margherita Della Valle said 5,000 cuts had been made, while 2,000 more have been confirmed.

She said 1,000 further cuts had come from the sale of the Spanish business, while the final 3,000 more cuts would be announced in the next two years.

Vodafone had about 104,000 staff before the job-cutting programme, with 9,000 people in the UK, including at its headquarters in Berkshire.

Revenue in Germany , Vodafone’s biggest market, fell to £11.1 billion from £11.3 billion last year, but returned to growth in the final quarter. UK revenue was roughly stable at £5.9 billion.

Meanwhile, Vodafone’s proposed merger with Three UK remains in “deep conversations” with the Competition and Markets Authority, but is “progressing well,” Ms Della Valle said.

She said: “The substance of the merger remains the one we have discussed in the past that should be really attractive to all stakeholders, not just our customers but also the broader UK base with more investment in our network that will trigger more investment for everyone.”

It comes after the government said it would conditionally approve the merger on national security grounds, leaving the final decision with the CMA.

Ms Della Valle said the company is “now delivering growth in all of our markets across Europe and Africa”.

“Much more still needs to be done in the year ahead. We will step up investment in our customer experience, improve our underlying performance in Germany and accelerate our momentum in business, whilst also continuing to simplify our operations throughout the group.”

Matt Britzman, an analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, said investors should not “confuse progress with a completed transformation”.

“Vodafone is still facing plenty of challenges, from higher costs to a core German market that’s still under pressure,” he said.

“The transformation is starting to take shape, but before getting too excited, markets will need to see sustained top-line growth over the coming year and a tighter grip on costs.”

Vodafone hails turnaround progress as Germany returns to growth

Telecoms company is awaiting a decision from the UK regulator on its potential merger with Three

  • Business live – latest updates

Vodafone has said its turnaround plan is starting to show results as Germany, its largest business, returned to growth last year after the sale of its Italian and Spanish operations.

The telecoms company has been undergoing a transformation programme under its chief executive, Margherita Della Valle, who has sought to simplify the group and taken action in three underperforming markets where Vodafone’s returns were below the cost of capital.

Vodafone sold off its Spanish division for €5bn (£4.3bn) as well as announcing an €8bn sale of its operations in Italy and a proposed merger with CK Hutchison’s Three in the UK which is being considered by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), the anti-trust regulator.

The telecoms company reported a 74% fall in operating profits for the year ended 31 March 2024 to €3.7bn against €14.4bn because results in the previous year were bolstered by exceptional gains including an €8.6bn gain on the sale of its Vantage Towers business as well as sales of Vodafone Hungary and Vodafone Ghana.

Vodafone is pressing ahead with cost-cutting measures. It has shed 5,000 roles and is cutting a further 2,000 as part of a €1bn cost reduction target; its aim is to axe up to 11,000 jobs by 2026.

Della Valle said that underlying performance in Germany was expected to improve so that by 2026 the country “will come back to being an important growth engine for the group”. She added that Vodafone was holding “deep conversations” with the CMA in the UK as the regulators examine the Three deal. The CMA has warned mobile customers could face higher prices and reduced quality as a result of the potential merger.

Della Valle said: “Much more still needs to be done in the year ahead. We will step up investment in our customer experience, improve our underlying performance in Germany and accelerate our momentum in business, while also continuing to simplify our operations.”

Vodafone has already said it will rebase its dividend and plans share buy-backs over two years, with €2bn from the proceeds of the Spanish business in 2025 and a further €2bn proceeds from the Italian arm in 2026.

The telecoms group faces questions about the 14.6 % stake held by its largest investor Emirates Telecommunications, which the UK government has identified as a national security risk . Ministers have ordered a national security committee to be set up at Vodafone to help oversee sensitive work.

after newsletter promotion

However a recent report authored by three barristers including Sir Robert Buckland KC, a former lord chancellor, concluded that the UAE’s stake in Vodafone raised serious concerns given UAE’s intelligence gathering apparatus and poor human rights record.

The barrister Ben Keith, who co-authored the report, has urged that the planned national security committee should be independent of Vodafone and include national security experts. There should also be enhanced data security and audits and also Vodafone should collaborate with human rights organisations and conduct regular assessments, the barristers suggested.

Vodafone said of the report: “Vodafone has extensive data security and privacy measures in place. Sensitive customer data is not visible to anyone – including the group CEO – outside our specific, security-vetted customer teams. Vodafone has a long-established human rights policy, which is developed in line with international standards as well as industry-specific principles.”

Biden’s China Tariffs Offer Path for Some Solar Exemptions (1)

By Jennifer A. Dlouhy

Jennifer A. Dlouhy

US President Joe Biden ’s plan to hike tariffs on a broad range of Chinese imports takes a nuanced approach to solar equipment from the country.

While so-called 301 tariffs on solar cells and modules from China will double, from 25% to 50%, the administration is also looking to exclude some key equipment from the duties altogether. The move responds to pleas from some US manufacturers, who argued tariffs on solar ingot and wafer-making equipment raised the costs of building American factories and undermined Biden’s goal of establishing a broad domestic supply chain.

Under the plans announced Tuesday, US Trade ...

Chinese EVs are coming to 9 European countries as part of a joint venture with auto-making giant Stellantis

Carlos Tavarez, Zhu Jiangming

European carmaker Stellantis on Tuesday said it had formed a joint venture with the Chinese electric vehicle startup Leapmotor that will begin selling EVs in nine European countries later this year.

Sales will begin in September for Belgium, France, Italy, Germany, Greece, Netherlands, Romania, Spain and Portugal, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said at a news event in Hangzhou.

From Q4, electric vehicles will also be sold to countries in South America, Middle East and Africa, as well as India and the Asia Pacific, Tavares said.

Stellantis and Leapmotor, an EV startup, did not provide details on where the electric vehicles would be produced, but that the location must have the “capacity available to support the sales” and meet quality criteria and cost competitiveness.

The models launched will be the T03 and C10 models, with plans to introduce one new model annually over the next three years, Tavares said.

“We expect to bring a significant boost to the international sales of these models,” he said.

The two companies announced new a joint venture called Leapmotor International to manufacture and sell Leapmotor’s electric vehicles outside of China. It is 51% owned by Stellantis and 49% owned by Leapmotor.

In October last year, Stellantis invested 1.5 billion euro ($1.61 billion) to buy a 21% stake in Leapmotor and announced a strategic partnership.

Leapmotor CEO Zhu Jiangming said that the alliance with Stellantis would help his company access an extensive overseas dealership and distribution system, as well as factories around the world.

“Political and regional uncertainties in the future are likely to make it inevitable for Chinese new energy vehicle brands to manufacture globally,” Zhu said.

His comments come as the Biden administration announced  plans to slap new tariffs  on Chinese electric vehicles, advanced batteries, solar cells, steel, aluminum and medical equipment, a move that’s likely to increase friction between the world’s two largest economies.

Both the U.S. and Europe have accused China of overproducing electric cars and dumping them in overseas markets.

Mining giant Anglo American to break up its sprawling business as it tries to fend off takeover

  • Copy Link copied

LONDON (AP) — Mining giant Anglo American PLC plans to break up its sprawling worldwide business — including spinning off the DeBeers diamond operation — as it seeks to fend off a takeover and focus on minerals that are expected to boom amid the global shift to green energy.

London-based Anglo American said Tuesday that it would spin off its platinum business, sell a unit that produces coal used in steel production and “explore all options” to separate DeBeers from the parent company.

The moves will allow Anglo American to concentrate on the production of copper and iron ore, which together accounted for more than two-thirds of its profit last year. The company will also retain its crop nutrients business.

The announcement came a day after Anglo American rejected a sweetened takeover bid from rival BHP Group that valued the company at 34 billion pounds ($42.6 billion). That was about 9% higher that BHP’s previous offer.

“We are taking clear and decisive action to deliver value — safely, responsibly and reliably — in the long-term interests of our shareholders and other stakeholders, and to deliver the products that are so critical to enabling the energy transition and supporting improved global living standards and food security,” Anglo Chief Executive Duncan Wangled said in a statement.

President Joe Biden speaks in the Rose Garden of the White House in Washington, Tuesday, May 14, 2024, announcing plans to impose major new tariffs on electric vehicles, semiconductors, solar equipment and medical supplies imported from China. (AP Photo/Susan Walsh)

Anglo American shares fell 2.8% to 2,632 pence in midafternoon trading in London on Tuesday. The stock had risen as much as 33% in the previous three weeks on speculation about a takeover.

The company is seeking to simplify its operations and boost returns for shareholders by focusing on a smaller range of products that are likely to benefit from the drive to reduce the use of fossil fuels and cut carbon emissions linked to global warming.

Demand for copper, a key component of electrical wiring, solar panels, wind turbines and electric vehicles, is expected to double by 2035, according to an analysis from S&P Global Market Intelligence.

Anglo American also says high-quality iron ore from its mines can help steel producers reduce carbon emissions, while the naturally occurring fertilizer the company produces can help boost crop yields and reduce emissions from agriculture.

Anglo American was the world’s eighth-biggest mining company last year, when it reported revenue of $30.7 billion. That was dwarfed by the $217.8 billion generated by Glencore, the world’s biggest miner.

Anglo American was founded more than 100 years ago to mine gold in South Africa and quickly expanded into diamonds, platinum and copper.

At the end of last year, the company had about 60,000 employees in 13 countries stretching from Australia to Peru.

The company owns 85% of De Beers, which produces about a third of the world’s rough diamonds and sells diamond jewelry. The remainder is owned by the government of Botswana.

South Africa remains at the heart of Anglo American’s business, with the company employing more than 36,000 people in the country at the end of last year.

Anglo American acknowledged the impact the reorganization plan could have on workers, promising to engage with “relevant stakeholders” and comply with all consultation requirements and local laws.

My post-divorce Mother's Days are the best. I get to do whatever I want.

  • While I was married, I was always disappointed on Mother's Day.
  • The holiday such emphasized the disconnection we had as a couple.
  • Now I get to plan exactly the day I want to celebrate myself.

Insider Today

When I was married, it was our unofficial tradition for me to be disappointed each Mother's Day . I had the same request every year: brunch at the historic inn in the next town over. And every year, my husband would forget,

My first Mother's Day as a single parent arrived just weeks after my husband left our family home. I was worried it would be a sad affair, but the opposite was true. I spent the morning gardening with my children, who were just 1 and 4 years old. The baby played with cups of water under a tree while my big boy helped plant a few flowers.

In the afternoon, some friends came over, and we lazed around the yard until dinner time when I ordered some pizzas to share. The day was simple yet full of love.

What a revelation that was — that Mother's Day is better when I'm not depending on someone else to make me happy or to acknowledge my worth.

The holiday highlighted our disconnect

Looking back, I can see that my Mother's Day angst was just one of many signs that our marriage was in trouble . The truth was he didn't think my contributions warranted celebration. Contrary to what we'd discussed while dating, he resented that I wasn't a more "traditional" wife doing all the child-rearing, that I expected him to parent equally, and that I hoped to be appreciated for what he saw as the barest of minimums.

Ultimately, he wanted someone more like his own mother — who worked a demanding job and then came home to do all the parenting and housework as well. He wanted someone who planned, shopped for, and executed each magical holiday, including her own Mother's Day.

Related stories

Ironically, now I am that mother. I'm the breadwinner , the sole parent, and the only adult in charge. In our little family of three, it's all up to me — including any plans to celebrate me. But now, I don't mind as much.

I get to plan whatever I want now

The beauty of a single Mother's Day is that I can make it whatever I want. I don't have to wait for a partner to make a phone call, offering subtle or not-so-subtle hints on what I'm hoping for. There's no hoping that my partner will offer me a kid-free morning. I simply schedule a sitter. And there's no need to feel sad when I don't get a card because I already know how I feel about myself. I already know that I'm worthy.

I always carve out some time to spend with my own mom, sans kids, because that's time without the work and distraction of parenting when I can focus on her.

When I can swing it, I'll spend some time alone, too — ideally somewhere peaceful, like a walk or a paddle in my canoe. I've also visited bookstores and cafes and have even hidden in my room for a bit, the kids glued to cartoons elsewhere in the house when a sitter wasn't possible.

And then there are the kids, of course — the two wonderful people who made me a mother and who continue to keep me on my toes. I want to actually enjoy spending time with them on Mother's Day, so that means keeping the plan realistic and somewhat kid-focused with a game of basketball in our driveway, board games on the porch, or a walk in the woods. I remember to take a mental snapshot of the incredible people they are and how lucky I am to be their mom, because they are, and I am.

My kids are old enough for brunch now

This year, they'll be 10 and 7 on Mother's Day, and while I don't think we're ready for a trip to the inn just yet, they are old enough to handle a casual brunch place, and the reservations are already made. Afterward, the plan is to drop the kids off with a sitter while I take my mom for pedicures, and then I'll take my canoe out for a solo paddle on one of my favorite rivers.

Who knows how it will actually go. The youngest may get his 12th cold of the season. Or the sitter will not show up. The creek may very well rise, and the day could just be too stormy for paddling. There will undoubtedly be some challenging moments along the way, as there always are.

But the day will be on my terms. I'm free to celebrate my strengths as a mother, as I see them, to enjoy having two healthy kids and my own mother still around to celebrate with, and the space to do it all my own way.
