Exclusive: Mavs' O-Max Prosper Speaks on G League Assignment, Development, More

  • Author: Grant Afseth

In this story:

Dallas Mavericks

FRISCO — The  Dallas Mavericks assigned rookie Olivier-Maxence Prosper to the G League before departing for New Orleans on Saturday. He played with the Texas Legends in Frisco against the Oklahoma City Blue, finishing with 19 points, nine rebounds, four assists, one steal, and one block in the 114-110 victory.

"My first goal was really just to come in and come in and try to help this team get a win," Prosper told DallasBasketball.com. "That's the biggest thing, you know, as a competitor would have come in and impact winning. And that was my main thing by doing the things I could control.

"For me, this game was big because I haven't played a game like heavy minutes in a minute. So, I just wanted to come in, get my rhythm, and do the little things that can help this team get a win, especially but it lost last night to this team, you know, trying to help them bounce back, and I thought we did that for sure."

Prosper, who played five minutes in the Mavs' 144-126 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday, has a chance to potentially log minutes in some capacity in three consecutive days between his time with the main club and the Legends. He appreciates getting a "real game" under his belt and is esctactic to potentially appear in a game in three straight days.

"It's awesome. It's all great stuff. As a guy who loves playing this game, you want to compete at the highest level, and for me, this game was really good for me because it helped me just get back in the rhythm of playing. As I go back to the Mavs now, I've got a real game under my belt, and I feel more confident when I get on the court with the Mavs.

"This game was great for me. And then three games in a row, I love it," Prosper explained. "I just have, to make sure I rest well and take care of my body, but I'll take that any day."

Prosper scored his first NBA points on Friday, which he described as feeling like "breaking the ice" in his career. After having that moment of arrival at the sports' highest level, he is focused on continuing to grow within his game and role.

"It's like breaking the ice, really," Prosper said. "It's a great, great relief, getting your first point and now it's on, you broke the ice, that's a relief off your shoulders. And then now, we're rolling and that's all good."

Luka Doncic made it a point to save the game ball from Friday's win for Prosper to appreciate scoring his first NBA points. Prosper shared his great appreciation for Doncic's gesture of saving the game ball for him and praised his teammates for how they've treated him in his rookie season, highlighting them as great mentors.

"Nah, it means a lot. It means the world, I mean," Prosper said. "My teammates have been great with me since the first time I set foot here in Dallas, they've been great. Just helping me, being great mentors for me. And just seeing that they care about that, they were so happy for me. It really meant a lot.

"It really showed that they cared about me and want me to succeed," Prosper explained. "And it was great to see Luka do that for me."

In terms of his development, Prosper continues to put in a lot of time in to refine his game, whether it's shooting, attacking downhill, or learning the nuances of the Mavs' concepts.

"I've put a lot of time in the gym, even though you don't see me playing on the court, but behind the scenes, in practice, after practice. I put a lot of work on my shooting," Prosper said. "I work on my ability to get downhill, get fouled. Defensively, just learning all the concepts and being one step ahead defensively so when I come on the floor with the Mavs, I know what I'm doing and everything. So, just those little things.

"My energy and the way I impact the game just through my rebounding and everything, that's always something I'm going to do regardless," Prosper explained.

It's common for players to have particular parts of their shooting mechanics to emphasize early in their career as they work to become more consistent as a shooter. Prosper is currently focused on his footwork and sticking his landing to stay on balance as opposed to swaying left or right.

"Making sure I step in with the right footwork and when I shoot, I stick my landing, stay on balance, and I don't sway left or right," Prosper said. "That's the biggest thing for me. Once I'm on balance, and I shoot it, I stick landing; that's when it's usually good."

As far as what reads he's emphasized when continuing to study the game, Prosper has emphasized learning the ins and outs of complement his superstar teammates like Doncic and Kyrie Irving, seeing where he can do the little things to make an impact.

"Honestly, it's just being able to play off Luka and Kyrie and seeing opportunities where I can cut, pportunities where I can drift to open shots, especially when they draw two people," Prosper said. "Opportunities where I can come and screen and roll and short pocket. Just seeing where, how they attack and where I can try to get cuts or get open shots.

"That's really what I'm looking at because playing off those guys, you're going to get a lot of those because there's going to be a focus on them and being seen where I can get open shots, that's the biggest thing, for sure.”

Hoops Rumors Glossary: G League Assignments

NBA G League teams have no shortage of ways to stock their rosters. They can retain players’ returning rights, add players through the G League draft, acquire players via waivers, take on affiliate players from NBA training camps, sign players they find in preseason tryout camps, and carry players on two-way contracts . Yet perhaps the most noteworthy players to pass through the G League come via NBA assignment.

The players assigned to the G League by NBA teams aren’t quite like other G-Leaguers. NBA players receive their full NBA salaries while on G League assignment, whereas a G League player without an NBA contract receives far more modest annual earnings ($41K for most NBAGL players in 2023/24).

A G League assignment could technically come at a financial cost for an NBA player, since performance in the NBAGL doesn’t count toward any incentive clauses built into an NBA contract. So if a player heads down to the G League on a rehab assignment and plays in a couple games for his NBA club’s affiliate, none of the numbers he puts up during that assignment would count toward the performance incentives built into his contract.

Generally speaking though, only longer-tenured veteran NBA players have incentives in their contracts, and most of those players won’t be assigned to the G League. Virtually all of the NBA players assigned to the G League have fewer than three full years of experience, since players in their first, second or third NBA seasons are the only ones whom NBA teams can unilaterally send down to the G League.

nba g league assignments

Occasionally, a healthy player with at least three years of experience will approve a G League assignment. For instance, Trail Blazers center Moses Brown , who hasn’t been part of Portland’s regular rotation at the NBA level this season, has accepted multiple assignments to the Rip City Remix, where he has gotten the opportunity to play a larger role.

Once a player has been assigned to the G League, he can remain there indefinitely, and lengthy stints aren’t uncommon. However, since there’s no limit to the number of times an NBA team can assign and recall a player, assignments can also be very brief, particularly now that many teams are in close geographical proximity to their G League affiliates. There have even been instances in which a player suits up for an NBAGL team earlier in the day, then is recalled to play for his NBA club later that night.

A total of 27 NBA teams own their G League affiliates outright, while two others (the Rockets and Nuggets ) operate the basketball operations of their affiliates in “hybrid” partnerships with local ownership groups. Teams that have these arrangements can set up a unified system in which the G League club runs the same offensive and defensive schemes as its parent club, and coaches dole out playing time based on what’s best for the NBA franchise.

Only one NBA club – the Suns – doesn’t have a G League affiliate of its own in 2023/24. However, Phoenix can still assign players to the G League via the “flexible assignment” rule. If, for instance, the Suns want to send Jordan Goodwin to the G League, NBAGL teams can volunteer to accept him. Phoenix can choose from those clubs if there are multiple volunteers, but if no G League team raises its hand, the NBAGL will randomly choose one of its hybrid affiliate teams to accept Goodwin.

Goodwin isn’t a viable candidate for a G League assignment, since he plays regular minutes for the Suns, but he’s the only player on the roster who has fewer than three years of NBA service, making him the only Phoenix player who could be unilaterally assigned to the NBAGL.

Only players on standard NBA contracts can be assigned to the G League and recalled to the NBA — while players on two-way contracts can also be shuttled back and forth between the two leagues, those moves are referred to as “transfers,” rather than assignments or recalls.

After an exhilarating Day 1 that showcased the talents of draft-eligible prospects, the excitement reverberated through the Wintrust Arena for Day 2 of the 2024 G League Elite Camp.

Building upon the momentum of the previous day’s action , prospects took to the court with renewed vigor, eager to make their mark and impress NBA scouts, coaches, and executives.

Day 1 Overview

Ellis dazzled with a game-high 23 points, showcasing his versatility and impact. LeDee dominated the paint, while Estrada and Love displayed their offensive prowess. House impressed with his two-way play, rounding out an electrifying start to the Elite Camp.

Day 2 Recap

The matchups for Day 2 of the G League Elite Camp continued the previous day’s format, with Team 1 facing off against Team 4 and Team 2 competing against Team 3. This arrangement allowed prospects to showcase their skills against opponents, building upon the dynamics established during Day 1’s matchups.

In the first set of games on Day 1, Team 1 clashed with Team 2, while Team 3 squared off against Team 4. These initial matchups set the stage for intense competition and spirited performances, setting the tone for the subsequent contests on Day 2.

With each team aiming to secure victory and make a lasting impression, Day 2’s games showcased the competitive spirit and determination of the draft-eligible prospects vying for a shot at the professional level.

The opening matchup of Day 2 set the tone for another day of intense competition and standout performances.

Kansas State’s Arthur Kaluma ignited the crowd with a powerful slam, setting the stage for a thrilling contest. House showcased his scoring ability with a tough floater, while former Washington Huskies forward Keion Brooks Jr. demonstrated his athleticism with a thunderous dunk through contact.

Furthermore, Villanova’s Mark Armstrong impressed with his coast-to-coast drive, and Akron’s Enrique Freeman continued his stellar play with a game-high 16 points. Ultimately, Pittsburgh’s Blake Hinson led all scorers with 18 points, guiding Team 2 to victory over Team 3 in a hard-fought battle.

Florida guard Walter Clayton Jr. displayed his shooting prowess with a smooth stepback jumper. Miami’s Wooga Poplar stole the show with an impressive performance, leading Team 1 to victory over Team 4 with 18 points and four rebounds.

NBA Draft Combine Call-Ups

Overall, Day 2 of the G League Elite Camp provided another captivating showcase of talent and potential. In addition to the thrilling on-court action, Day 2 of the G League Elite Camp brought exciting news for three standout prospects.

After the event, five players received invites to the 2024 NBA Draft Combine . West Virginia’s Jesse Edwards , Memphis’ Nae’Qwan Tomlin , Ellis, Jones, and Freeman will participate in the 2024 NBA Draft Combine call-up.

With this opportunity, Edwards can further showcase his abilities and make a lasting impression on NBA decision-makers as he pursues his basketball aspirations at the highest level. Tomlin’s journey from a preseason suspension at Kansas State to the G League Elite Camp to the pinnacle of pre-draft evaluation underscores his impressive skill set and potential as a prospect.

Ellis, a late addition to the Elite Camp, showcased his skills with flair, solidifying his place among the elite prospects. Similarly, Jones’ journey from Portsmouth to the G League Elite Camp culminated in a well-deserved opportunity to showcase his talents on a bigger stage.

Freeman’s impressive performance throughout the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament and the Elite Camp earned him recognition and an invitation to the NBA Draft Combine.

Resounding Success

Two days of intense competition and standout performances have created significant opportunities for rising prospects. From electrifying dunks to clutch plays, they showcased the draft-eligible participants’ talent, determination, and potential each moment on the court.

As prospects now transition to the next phase of their basketball journeys, with some earning coveted call-ups to the NBA Draft Combine, the legacy of the Elite Camp endures as a platform for aspiring athletes to shine and realize their dreams of professional basketball success. Finally, with memories of thrilling matchups and breakout performances fresh in the minds of all who witnessed it, the G League Elite Camp is a testament to the boundless potential of the next generation of basketball stars.

2024 NBA Mock Draft: Hawks go with Alex Sarr after winning top pick in lottery; Stephon Castle to Wizards

Atlanta grabs trae young some help at no. 1, while detroit snags a falling frenchman at no. 5.

NBL Rd 19 - Perth Wildcats v Cairns Taipans

The bouncing ping-pong balls have settled and the offcial order of the 2024 NBA Draft has officially been determiined after the conclusion of yet another drama-filled NBA Draft Lottery on Sunday in Chicago that saw the Atlanta Hawks -- for the first time in franchise history! -- win this year's event. Now it's time to project the landing spots.

Our first NBA mock draft after the lottery officially has every team slotted in its proper spot following tiebreaker drawings and the highly-anticipated lottery from Sunday, which was, per usual, filled with chaos and unexpected results. Atlanta had just a 3% chance to win the No. 1 pick but moved up nine spots to No. 1, the second-largest leap in lottery history. Meanwhile, the Pistons fell from No. 1 to No. 5, the worst possible outcome for a Detroit franchise that had the same fortunes one year ago.

This draft is as wide-open as one has been in several years, though, so projecting the top of this draft isn't as simple as, say, the Victor Wembanyama draft or Zion Williamson draft. That means Atlanta gets first stab in an underwhelming class, and also means Detroit might just have the best prospect in the class fall to it at No. 5. Ya never know.

Our latest NBA mock draft is below.

NBA to shut down G League Ignite after this season

HENDERSON, NEVADA - SEPTEMBER 08: Ron Holland #0, London Johnson #2 and Eric Mika #12 of G League Ignite wait to be introduced before an NBA G League Fall Invitational game against the Perth Wildcats on September 08, 2023 in Henderson, Nevada. The Wildcats defeated Ignite 127-112. The NBA is shutting down the G League Ignite team after this season, canceling the development squad of elite draft prospects and veterans that was launched in 2020, sources briefed on the matter told The Athletic on Thursday, a decision that was confirmed by the league later in the day.

The NBA launched the Ignite at a point when no other American pro league provided a path for pre-draft eligible players to be significantly compensated to play before entering the draft. With the rise of name, image and likeness (NIL) and the transfer portal in college basketball, the need for the Ignite elite team was eliminated. Now, NIL allows players to earn money while going to college and receiving NCAA experience.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver had said at All-Star Weekend last month that Ignite’s future was being reassessed .

“I’m not sure what the future of Team Ignite will be because before I felt there was a hole in the marketplace we were filling,” Silver said. “Now my focus is turning to earlier development of those players.”

The league’s first two signings — the Houston Rockets’ Jalen Green and the Golden State Warriors’ Jonathan Kuminga , the No. 2 and No. 7 picks in the 2021 NBA Draft, respectively — represent tremendous success stories and proof of accomplishment for the Ignite’s four-year run. Last year, Scoot Henderson went No. 3 overall to Portland after a standout Ignite season. It’s believed salaries for elite prospects were as high as $1 million per season, such as Henderson’s deal in 2022-23.

Since 2020, the Ignite has produced more than 10 draft selections, including four top-10 picks. G League president Shareef Abdur-Rahim oversaw the Ignite’s roster and coaching staff, hiring respected former NBA players and coaches in Brian Shaw and Jason Hart as the program’s head coaches over four years.

The Ignite has struggled this season with a 6-40 record, although prospects Matas Buzelis and Ron Holland are projected to be lottery picks in June’s draft. Ignite’s last game is scheduled for March 28.

“Four years ago, we started Ignite to fill a void in the basketball landscape, and I’m proud of the contributions we were able to make to that ecosystem,” Abdur-Rahim said in a statement. “With the changing environment across youth and collegiate basketball, now is the right time to take this step. I want to extend my sincere gratitude to general manager Anthony McClish, head coach Jason Hart and their staff and to each player who wore an Ignite jersey. As ever, the G League’s commitment to developing top NBA talent and helping players achieve their NBA dreams is unwavering.”

DJ LeMahieu nears rehab assignment; Gerrit Cole throws BP session

  • Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS -- Injured Yankees players DJ LeMahieu and Gerrit Cole are headed back to New York after spending time rehabbing at the team's complex in Tampa, Florida, with LeMahieu likely to start a rehab assignment later this week.

LeMahieu took live at-bats and worked defensively before making the trip to New York while the Yankees begin a three-game series in Minnesota . Manager Aaron Boone said LeMahieu, who has been out all season after a non-displaced fracture of his right foot during spring training, would likely start a minor league rehab assignment on Thursday or Friday.

"Definitely want him to play games and get some volume under his belt," Boone said pregame Monday, adding he was unsure of how many rehab games LeMahieu might play before being activated.

Meanwhile, Cole threw "30-some, 36 pitches or so" in his latest throwing session as he recovers from right elbow inflammation.

"Gerrit, everything went well," Boone said. "Gerrit, just onward and upward."

The Yankees also announced that outfielder Jasson Domínguez (Tommy John surgery recovery) and infielder Jorbit Vivas (left orbital fracture) are starting rehab assignments with Single-A Tampa. They faced former Yankee Domingo Germán, who made his first start with the Pirates' Single-A affiliate Tuesday. Right-hander Tommy Kahnle (right shoulder inflammation) had his rehab assignment transferred to Double-A Somerset.
