Why I stopped giving homework passes & my students loved it!

For years (literally, like 7 of them), homework passes were my go-to reward. Had a birthday, I gave you a Birthday Pass.

Did something above and beyond? I rewarded you with a pass.

Get the picture? It was pretty bad…or good, depending on your viewpoint. About a year ago, I had an epiphany.

Why you should rethink homework passes and what you should consider trying instead

As I am sure you know, there is a plethora of research on homework.

There are those in the Alfie Kohn camp , who argue homework has no educational purpose. Then there are those who suggest that without it, there just isn't enough time in the day to build all the necessary academic skills.

However, neither of these camps actually swayed my decision. Keep reading to find out why I no longer give homework passes & what I do instead.

What you'll find on this page:

Why I stopped giving homework passes

So why did I give up on passes?

While they weren't causing any major issues, they also weren't serving any purpose. In fact, they were working against my goals.

I stopped giving these passes because it gave the impression that I didn't see the homework as purposeful or valuable.

Why am I giving it if I am willing to let you skip it?

A homework pass tells students that homework doesn't matter. They can skip it on a whim just by trading in a ticket. Some students used these appropriately – when they forgot an assignment or had a busy night and couldn't quite finish. However, most did not.

Homework passes tell students that the assignment itself is a punishment.

Instead, I want my students to be getting value from their assignments…perhaps even (GASP!!) enjoying it.

Student completing homework homework passes

How do I handle things now that I quit giving homework passes?

At my campus, homework is required for all students starting in first grade so eliminating homework wasn't an option. While I may have wanted to, it just wasn't a choice for me. Instead, I decided to take a different route.

I decided to incorporate choice . I believe that choice is one of the biggest transformational factors we can incorporate into our classrooms. So the first thing I did was change the assignments to give students options.

For me, this came in the form of homework choice boards, which we called Homework BINGO .

Homework Choice Boards

Homework choice boards offer me the opportunity to differentiate while being sure students were practicing the essential skills required by my school – like math facts and consistently reading at home.

When I introduced the new homework format, the students LOVED it! It was the first time they felt like they had any control over their school assignments.

How do Homework Choice Boards work?

I knew homework should focus on practicing skills that students have already learned. Many students don't have a parent to help them with homework, and they don't need to be trying to master new skills without support.

I also don't want to set families up for added stress because they aren't available to help as much as they would like. It just isn't great for building home-school relationships , you know?

Homework BINGO boards

That's why I set up the assignments in each square of the choice board to be something they should already know how to do independently.

Reading, writing, math – the basics. I knew if my students continued to build on the basics at home they could do the more challenging tasks at school more easily.

I created the options on the Homework BINGO boards to be familiar but to push students slightly out of their comfort zone. For example, about half of the squares on the board were reading and writing activities, but each square is different.

The option in one square might be 15 minutes of reading about a famous person.

Another square is reading a book of your own choice. They are both reading, but now the students have options and parents can be in control of differentiating based on what works for their lifestyle.

Differentiated Homework

I did the same thing for writing, math, and spelling (all our required homework components).

So what are the rules of Homework BINGO?

I urge the students to make a variety of choices in order to earn BINGO each week. However, I do not make this a requirement. Instead, each student must finish 10 of the 25 squares.

I offer an incentive for those earning BINGO – a chance to earn line leader the following week. Since this is a pretty hot commodity in my classroom, I get many students trying to enter the competition.

Flexible homework options

Regardless of whether they get BINGO, students have their choice board signed by an adult and return it on Friday. That's it! I pass out a new board on Monday, and students glue it into their take-home journal and we start the process again.

And what do your students and parents think about it?

You wouldn't believe how many students describe their homework as fun!

And the parents?

Let's just say I get a LOT less parent communication about homework now.

Over the years, I've heard it all.

“You give too much homework.”

“Can you give us some extra assignments? We need more homework.”

With the Homework BINGO boards, parents can differentiate for their children. The ball is in their court with how much homework to give beyond the minimum expectations.

I even get comments during parent conferences about how much they like the homework and how they see their children challenging themselves to try something new.

Definitely not something I ever imagined happening.

My replacement for homework passes – Choice Boards

Of course, I still have rewards in my room. I've adjusted them so they don't undermine the joy of learning as the passes did.

Homework Passes homework passes

Popular choices these days include:

  • Shoes off math – a carry-over from my own 2nd-grade teacher, Mr. Hammer, who was WAY ahead of his time
  • Use markers or crayons instead of pencils on an assignment
  • Flashlight reading

Basically, I have decided to give other choices that are exciting to the students. The funny thing is, I don't miss homework passes…and neither do my students. My homework process is smoother, and my students are interested in participating.

Homework choice boards

Want to try the BINGO choice boards in your classroom?

Want to give this differentiated homework option a try? It is currently available in my Teachers Pay Teachers store.

You can get Homework BINGO here .

It contains weekly homework sheets aligned with a September to May school year. Each week has a slightly different set of options that go with monthly themes and holidays.

Homework BINGO is also editable to allow you to align tasks to your unit plans and practice your students need to be successful. This means you can provide differentiated homework menus to fit your classroom each year.

Homework choice boards

I'd love to hear more about homework in your classroom. Do you still use homework passes?

The Magic of a Homework Pass for Classroom Management

Middle school classroom management requires a teacher to have many different strategies at their fingertips. Add the homework pass strategy to your classroom management plan to help engage and reward students from the 2 Peas and a Dog blog.

I surprised all of them this morning with a HAPPY NEW YEAR homework pass. I rarely hand out paper homework passes because I am trying to cut down on my class’ paper consumption. This year students have received only three paper homework passes Welcome Back, Birthday and Happy New Year.

Students get so excited when they get a homework pass. The majority of my students do not use them. They like to collect them throughout the year to see how many they can collect and not use. I taught some of my current students last year in my 7/8 split. They asked me on the first day of school if their homework passes carry over.

Do you use homework passes in your classroom? What is your procedure? Please share your ideas in the comments section below.  Try reward passes in your classroom. Find this resource on Shopify CAD and Teachers Pay Teachers USD .

K-Hope you are feeling better soon! I love the idea for the passes! I don't do this because I expect homework to be done and I give students plenty of time to get it finished and handed in on time. I do use something similar to you though..I stopped having a prize box this year and I have a set of cards…I got the idea from PINTEREST..and I laminated them. Things like, Special Supply Box, Specialty Seating, Wear a Hat in Class, Wear your IPOD in class. The kids LOVE it. I keep track of them in a method similar to yours…but I do hand out the pass…the kids love picking one out and then they have to submit it when they want to redeem it. I guess I don't worry too much because I laminated them, so they will get used again and again. This has motivated my students much more than the regular "pull something out of the prize box" and it has cost me next to nothing! Get better soon!

5 Alternatives to Homework

September 7, 2021 | Leave a Comment

5 stress-free alternatives to homework title

Are you tired, stressed out, and need alternatives to homework? Assigning homework can sometimes seem like a pointless task. Students that need the practice don’t complete or turn in homework, and students that generally excel complete the homework. Then there’s the decision to make about grading homework. Can it be a grade if you don’t know who completed it or how much help they received? Is it worth grading when you are so far behind?

At my Title I school I am mindful that not every student has a family member available to help them in the evenings complete homework. For this reason if I assign homework I try to make it something that can be completed independently. Since I teach second grade I might send home first grade reading passages for fluency practice with a multiple choice option for the comprehension section. Math pages might be a game to practice or flashcards to study.

This year I am not assigning homework. It feels so freeing! Some schools do require homework though so the following is a list of 5 alternatives to homework in an elementary school if you do not have a choice.

No matter what type of homework I use I always tell parents that I recommend 15-20 minutes of nightly reading and a quick 5 minute practice of their sight word and math flash cards. To me reading is one of the best things a student can do to improve in elementary school.

1 - Monthly Family Homework

Having a monthly themed family homework was my favorite homework when I taught first grade. There was little to nothing to grade and students loved getting creative. Each month is a different task and students are given most of the month to complete the homework.

December holiday hidden patterns family homework idea.

The picture shown was our December holiday homework where students were given a tree outline and asked to decorate their tree using a “hidden holiday pattern.” Students that turned in the homework gave a super short presentation about how they created their pattern and the class guessed the pattern.

During November, the task was to disguise a turkey outline. This is a hilarious (and common) activity to do every year. Some families come up with some amazingly creative ideas. A few other ideas I did throughout the year for family homework was decorating pumpkins as a favorite book character, creating a leprechaun trap, and an all about my family poster.

2 - Choice Boards

Choice Boards are becoming very common for homework. I used choice boards as a gifted education teacher many years ago and brought them back last year when we transitioned to online learning due to COVID-19. It was an easy way to communicate homework with no access to a copy machine or a way to pass out packets.

Choice boards can be weekly or monthly choices for students to complete at home.

Catherine, the Brown Bag Teacher, talks about how she uses a choice board in her first grade class as a homework alternative that focuses on non-academic skills her students needed. Click here to read her blog article about homework alternatives .

Fisyrobb also uses a choice sheet (choice board) and has a free, editable version on her website. Click here to find the article and free download.

Choice boards can be assigned for a week or a month depending on how many choices you add. I like to include choices that hit all of the learning styles so students can choose what best interests them. I also like to require that not all squares be completed.

3 - Unhomework Task Cards

This unhomework alternative is one of my favorites I’ve seen lately. I stumbled across this idea by Debbie of live, laugh, love to learn. While task cards are not a new concept I just love how she breaks down the tasks into four main categories: acts of kindness, good habits, create, and real world math and science.

Debbie’s tasks are super easy for students to complete and she assigns the whole class the same task each week. Students track their task such as how many times in the week they help their family. Then on Fridays the class has a meeting to discuss. Debbie also takes this a step further by compiling the information for a class graph or chart. Click here to go to Debbie’s blog post where she details everything you need to know to get started.

4 - Hands On Activities

Hands-on activities for alternatives to homework can really help your homework completion rate. Young students love doing activities. If you have a school population like mine, asking families to complete hands-on activities might mean going out of pocket to send additional materials home. For that reason, I recommend a Donors Choose project to help offset costs or making the hands-on activities a monthly requirement.

Some of my favorite hands-on activities revolve around spelling and sight word practice. At the beginning of each school year I send all my families my Sight Word Practice at Home booklets . Inside the booklets detail easy ways to practice sight words such as writing words in play dough or shaving cream.

Hands-on activities can be for sight words and spelling or for math games.

Hands-on activities are also a great way to introduce families to partner games. One year I sent home photocopies of several math partner games, a die, and a paperclip alongside a sheet protector and a whiteboard marker. After we learned the games in class, students were able to play them again at home. Several families loved learning these games and found it a fun and enjoyable way to get in some math practice.

5 - STEM Projects

My last idea for alternatives to homework is to send home STEM or STEAM projects. I don’t know about you but I rarely have the time in my day to spend on these type of activities. Having students complete them at home with families is a great way of exposing them to the importance of STEM/STEAM but also frees up time in my school day.

STEM projects can be a fantastic way to send projects home and get families involved.

Encourage families to take pictures or write a response to what they learned through the completion of their project. If time allows, have students share these pictures and responses during class. Seeing other students completing the projects is a great way to entice others to complete the work.

Last Thoughts for Successful Homework Alternatives

When considering any of these ideas for your year of unhomework, make sure to factor in how you want to make students accountable for completion. Will homework be a grade? Will you be tracking or rewarding students who complete the projects or tasks? Will you be supplying any materials needed to complete the assignment? How much time will you be giving for completing the work outside of class? Will your families be receptive to this new style of homework? Will the activities you send home be meaningful to your class and their learning? What is the main goal with this unhomework?

I hope you were able to get some great ideas for ditching the traditional homework and finding an alternative. I’d love to hear what is working in your classroom for homework. Do you offer homework? Leave me a comment below.

California's New Law Allows High School Students to Change Distance-Learning Grades

The goal is to protect a student’s GPA as they prepare for college.

By Marianne Favro • Published August 6, 2021 • Updated on August 6, 2021 at 5:49 pm

Across California, the deadline is looming for students to decide whether to trade last school year’s letter grades for a simple pass or fail and that deadline can vary by district.

For example, families at Los Gatos High School must decide by August 10 if they want to consider the “pass or fail” option.

For many high school students, online learning during a pandemic created challenges that they would not have faced in a classroom.

For Los Gatos High School student Lavanya Kalley, distance learning was also a challenge for her.

Get a weekly recap of the latest San Francisco Bay Area housing news. Sign up for NBC Bay Area’s Housing Deconstructed newsletter.

“Since middle school, I’ve been getting straight A’s. But definitely since this whole COVID learn-at-home situation, that changed for me,” she said.

Kalley, who is about to start her junior year at Los Gatos High School is relieved that she can now turn her less than desirable AP Calculus grade into a simple “pass” on her transcript.

Thanks to a new state law approved in July, high school students across California can replace one or several grades from last school year to a pass no pass.

State Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez introduced AB104 to help students struggling with zoom learning, sick family members and other challenges during the pandemic.

“This wasn’t the doing of the kids,” she said. “If a junior got a bad grade because they couldn’t learn Spanish online, let’s relieve the stress of that lower grade and let them compete like everyone else in a normal year.”

California State Universities and UC campuses including UC Berkeley said they will accept the pass or no pass option in their admissions.

Some private schools such as Santa Clara University also said they will do the same.

But the law is so new, many universities have not announced their policies.

So, what should families do? College counselor Colleen Bushay Robinson has this answer.

“My rule of thumb is if you have an A or B letter grade, keep it,” she said. “If you have a D choose pass no pass. if it is a C it depends on your situation. So, contact your school counselor and ask for their advice”

Gonzalez said she does not think the law will lead to students changing many courses to pass no pass to get a 4.0 because their transcripts will reflect their grades for all four years of high school.

But she does believe it will help reduce student’s stress. Lavanya says it already has.

"This just boosts my confidence to see a 'pass.' I’m happy about it,” said Kalley.

9 better alternatives to homework

by Katrina | Aug 31, 2022 | Lesson Ideas | 0 comments

Traditionally homework has been school work that students complete outside of the classroom and outside of school hours. This usually consists of textbook questions, worksheets, or research tasks.

Studies have been inconsistent in providing concrete evidence for the benefits of homework, and the effectiveness of set homework tasks depends greatly on the task itself.

This list of 9 alternatives to homework will help you give students a break from the norm while still impacting their learning and character development.

Alternatives to homework

It is worth noting that I don’t use the word ‘homework’. Why? Because it has such a deeply ingrained negative connotation for both students and parents.

Terms I prefer to use instead include:

  • At home learning
  • Daily / Weekly Practice
  • Consolidation

These terms don’t have the same negative connotation as ‘homework’ and help the students think about the tasks in a more positive way.

Before I get into my suggestions, here are some benefits of using alternatives to homework:

1. You don’t have to mark them. These activities are designed to be able to be marked simple as participated or not. Not all home learning tasks need to add to your workload!

2. They encourage the development of character traits and skills – not just academic ones.

3. They are simple and easy to assign to almost any topic – and in fact, they don’t need to be specifically linked to a topic at all.

4. The nature of the tasks remind students to maintain balance between school / study and home life.

5. They can be easily differentiated to cater for the variation of student situations.

1. Baking from a recipe

Following instructions is very important in life as well as most subjects. For example, in subjects, such as science, students need to be able to work safely in a laboratory.

Setting a home task where students need to bake something following a recipe is a great alternative that allows students to practice these skills in a fun way.

Have students either bring you a photo of them in action baking, or evidence of the product itself!

Be mindful: Check any food allergies of your students if you want students to bring in the treats they bake.

2. Photo challenge

Having students take a photo of their learning as applied in real life. This is a great way to help students practice being observant and also see the relevance of their learning outside of the classroom.

Be mindful: Students may not have access to a camera or smartphone. They could just write a short description of what they saw and where they saw it.

3. Play a board/card game

Playing board games or card games requires students to practice their social and problem-solving skills. These are skills that are essential in the classroom and also in the real world.

I love alternatives to homework that help build student character in addition to academic skills.

Be mindful: Depending on your context, students may not have access to board games or they may not have family members around each day to play a board game with. Often school libraries contain games that can be rented out.

4. Home learning / flipped learning

Flipped learning is different from homework in that rather than practicing a skill they have learned in class, they learn the skill so they come to class ready to practice the skill.

This is usually done with the teacher filming a short tutorial to be watched at home before the upcoming lesson.

Flipped learning helps to develop autonomy and allows students to take their learning at their own pace since they can pause, rewind and rewatch the video as many times as they need to.

The videos are usually less than 10 minutes in length so it is also a nice quick learning opportunity.

Be mindful: Ensure all students have access to the technology required to watch the video.

5. Activities that apply their learning

Activities that focus on applying their learning in practical ways are effective alternatives to homework tasks of a traditional sense.

For example, have you taught students about the unit cost in maths? The home task could be going shopping with a parent and photographing different options and calculating the best buy option.

Or maybe you’ve been learning about density in science? Have students compare the density of various household items in water at home.

6. Reflect on learning

Asking students to write a small paragraph to reflect on the things they learned in your class that day or week is a really valuable use of their time and a great alternative to homework.

Reflecting and writing it down helps their brain to recognize the information as important.

Are you reading this thinking ‘yeah but its so annoying to mark’.

Then don’t! Just mark it as a participation home task. Whether students submit their paragraph on Google Classroom or hold up their book in class for you to tick off ‘complete’, it doesn’t have to be an onerous task for you.

7. Interview someone

Interviewing someone can be as simple as giving the students 3 questions to ask someone at home. It could be about their own views on a topic, where they see the usefulness of your subject, or about their career.

This activity builds student skills in communication and listening whilst also providing an opportunity to build or deepen connections with people.

Be mindful: Some students may not have access to someone to interview every day. Try to give a few days so students have the opportunity. If they don’t have anyone at home you could suggest they interview a teacher, another student or even the bus driver.

8. Call someone you haven’t spoken to in a while

Promoting the continuation and building of connections during term time is important for students to maintain balance in their lives. Some students struggle to do this themselves and so may feel the need to have ‘permission’ from their teacher.

Be mindful: Some students may not have access to a phone or enough credit to make long calls. Provide alternatives such as chatting with a neighbour in person.

9. Spend time with family

If a student spends 60 minutes completing homework, then for a family whose parents don’t get home from work until after 5pm, and who go to bed around 9pm, that is one quarter of their family time taken away by homework every day. Add in an extracurricular activity or sport and students are missing out on significant family time.

The simple act of not setting any homework or task can make a significant difference in the home lives of our students.

Encouraging them to spend quality time with their family instead is a valuable alternative to homework.

Homework is not bad and it does have its benefits. However, having a range of alternatives to the typical homework tasks allows for students to enjoy a balanced life while also building skills other than just the academic ones.

Have you tried any of these alternatives to homework?

5 Homework Alternatives For Busy Teachers

Author: Antoinette Morris

Posted: 13 Nov 2023

Estimated time to read: 4 mins

Feeling caught up in the endless cycle of setting and marking homework? You’re not alone! Every busy teacher needs a break from the relentless homework every now and again, so keep reading for 5 suggestions that you can use instead of traditional homework to save yourself time while keeping your students engaged.

Reading

We had to start with the obvious, reading! Reading is a great way for your students to train their brains without completing a full blown assignment. You can pick a class book if you’re reading something together, get them to read more of a book they’re already reading or do a quick class visit to the school library.

The main problem with setting reading homework, as many teachers will know very well, is not being able to tell if your students have actually done it. Try setting a mini task along with the reading that ensures your students engage, like a 2-3 line summary of what they’ve read or picking 5 of their favourite adjectives. This will take far less time for you to look over than most regular homework tasks and your students will love it too!

Make a piece of art

Encourage your students to get creative and bring back a piece of art they’ve made! It helps to give out a prompt for this task like ‘nature’ or ‘your kitchen’ so your class don’t feel stuck on what to create.

Make sure you’re aware that not all children will have art supplies at home, so give them the freedom to work in whatever medium or style suits them. All they should need is a pencil and some paper to get started!

It’s also beneficial to set time expectations for this one, for example that they should spend no more than 30 minutes on their work, as well as to not ask them to show the whole class (as this can really take the fun out of being creative).

Homework alternatives for busy teachers

Play games

Gamifying education is an excellent way to get your students engaged and having a good time. Your school may already use educational games for maths, english or touch typing study (in which case you can easily set work on these), or BBC bitesize have a great variety of games for both primary and secondary .

Check out this blog if you want to learn more about the benefits of gamification in the classroom!

Learn a life skill

Sewing, skipping stones, identifying plants, using a dustpan and brush… there are an endless number of random little life skills that are helpful for your students to learn. You can write a short list of easy skills to master as an example for anyone who’s stuck on what to choose, but otherwise let students choose whatever they want and report back next lesson!

Here are some good options to get you started, this will depend a lot on age, but your students could learn how to:

  • Take care of a houseplant
  • Do a load of washing
  • Wrap a present
  • Follow a new recipe
  • Wash a car
  • Do origami
  • Write a letter

The possibilities are endless!

Write a quiz

Asking students to make a short quiz on a topic of their choice is another great alternative to homework that lets them engage thoughtfully with something they’re interested in.

Kahoot! or Quizlet are great options for this, although submitting their questions via Satchel One is also a great option if you aren’t doing the quizzes together as a follow up activity.

My son's alternative school doesn't have grades, tests, or homework. Kids decide what they're interested in learning.

  • I decided to send my son, Jasper, to a K-12 school called the Arts and Ideas Sudbury School.
  • The school is based on a philosophy that allow kids to make their own decisions about education.
  • It has no grades, tests, or homework.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Adrienne Bergthold. It has been edited for length and clarity.

When my youngest son, Jasper, was getting ready for kindergarten, I was struggling with where to send him to school. I'd always viewed school as an opportunity to instill a love of learning, and I felt like public school was too stressful for kids because of all the pressure around grades, homework, and tests. Private school is expensive , and I didn't have the patience to homeschool. So I started to consider affordable alternative schooling options in our area.

I first heard about a local K-12 school called the Arts and Ideas Sudbury School from another mom I was talking to at the park when Jasper was little. I didn't think much of it until I happened to hear the founder talking about the school on the radio. The principles of giving kids the freedom to learn about what they're interested in, without the added stress of grades and tests, really resonated with me.

Arts and Ideas seemed like the right school for Jasper

I looked into it a bit more, and Arts and Ideas seemed like the perfect fit. It was only five minutes from our house, and it was much more affordable than private schools in our area. Before making a decision, I signed up Jasper for the visiting week for families to check out the school before enrolling . After a week of visiting, he was telling me about fractions and holding doors open for me.

He started kindergarten there in 2010 and graduated just last year, in 2023. From kindergarten on, Jasper had so many opportunities to learn how to live in the real world. Arts and Ideas is a Sudbury School , which is a worldwide educational philosophy that allows kids to make decisions about their own education. Along with making and enforcing the school rules together, students can choose what they want to learn about and how.

It's not formatted like a traditional school

At Arts and Ideas, there's no curriculum or formal classrooms. Kids learn by playing and doing what they're interested in. Rather than "teachers," the school has staff members who guide the students in what they want to learn. Instead of sitting in a classroom all day, students have the freedom to play outside, work on a project, or attend workshops on topics they want to learn about, including creative writing, acting, math, and coding.

There's a bulletin board in the hallway where kids can sign up for activities to participate in. If the kids express interest in something they want to learn, the staff and students will work together to organize new workshops. Sometimes, the workshops are at school, and other times they're field trips. Baltimore and the surrounding area have a lot to offer, so the opportunities feel endless.

For example, my son was interested in cooking from a young age because his dad was a baker. Jasper was involved in the school's Kitchen Corp, which cooked hot lunch every Friday. The students would work together to find out what everyone wanted to eat, plan the meals, take field trips to get ingredients at the local grocery store, and cook in the school kitchen for all the students. Jasper got to pursue his interest in cooking, but he also learned important real-life skills like organization, budgeting, math, and teamwork.

There are no grades, tests, homework , or other requirements, which takes stress out of the equation so kids can really fall in love with learning. The only requirement is that students need to attend school for five consecutive hours, including the "core hours" of 11–3 p.m. Students are totally free to do what they want during the school day, except for a few scheduled activities, such as daily chores and school-wide meetings.

Because there are no traditional classrooms , students are with kids who are both older and younger than them all day, which I believe helps everyone learn. Younger kids can learn from older students, and older students have the opportunity to help and mentor younger ones. When my son attended visiting week, for example, he learned fractions from kids who knew math.

To receive a diploma, students write and defend a thesis about how they've prepared to enter the real world. My son graduated in 2023, and he's currently taking a gap year before attending college. His experience at Arts and Ideas helped him get ready for life in the real world.

But more than that, Arts and Ideas gave Jasper a happy childhood and helped him grow into a secure adult. We have so many opportunities to do the work throughout our lives, and childhood should be about joy. Because of his education, I can say my son experienced a childhood free from the stress of anything but getting to know himself.

How Quizlet Compares to Homeworkify

When it comes to the main comparison, we always end with pricing, right

So, let’s see…

If you’re looking for a premium platform at an affordable price, Quizlet is an excellent choice.

However, for more advanced study materials, Homeworkify can be more beneficial, especially if you have a solid fundamental knowledge of the subject.

Conclusion on Homeworkify Alternative

Okay, now it’s time to make a decision.

I hope you’ve gone through all the highlighted key points mentioned in the article, especially regarding pricing.

Because sometimes, cost becomes a significant factor in choosing a tool.

In this scenario, you have the option of choosing between Brainly or Quizlet.

However, if pricing isn’t a concern for you, and you’re focused on finding the best option, it’s not a decision I can make quickly for you to use.

You should assess each of the alternatives one by one, and make note of their unique features that may cater to your needs.

Afterward, compare all the alternatives and select the one that suits you best.

Remember, this is simply a list to help you discover some legitimate alternatives, not the ultimate replacement for Homeworkify, as it largely depends on individual requirements.

I hope you will find the best one for you in this way.

Column: Older drivers reveal strategies for passing that ‘ridiculous’ California DMV renewal test

Drivers are still finding "obscure and ridiculous" questions when they have to take the written driving test at the DMV.

• Show more sharing options
  • Copy Link URL Copied!

I wouldn’t call it an atmospheric river, because those come and go. DMV mail falls in a never-ending rain, without regard to seasons.

Not that it’s all bad news from readers who, like good soldiers, dutifully report every development from the front lines of the battle to renew their driver’s licenses.

Rosa Maria Juarez, 94, shared a success story. The Montebello resident, who assured me she’s a safe and conscientious driver, passed easily and offered to coach me when I take the test later this year.

Here’s a pro tip from Juarez:

“They told me to go on a computer, but the computers are dirty. People are touching those computers. You can see the smudges, the dark spots. Like they never clean them.”

California is about to be hit by an aging population wave, and Steve Lopez is riding it. His column focuses on the blessings and burdens of advancing age — and how some folks are challenging the stigma associated with older adults.

Juarez asked for a paper test instead, sat down, and minutes later, BOOM! License renewed.

Culver City resident Parrish Hirasaki, 78, started to deliberate after hearing from so many friends who flunked the test. She studied the driving handbook with a highlighter, and then made a study guide — a grid with nine columns of facts about speeds (5 mph on ice), fines ($1,000 for speeding through a work zone) and distances (15 feet or more from a fire hydrant).

“Now I have bragging rights with my friends,” Hirasaki said after acing the test on her first try. “And I have bragged a lot.”

The road to renewal was a bit bumpier for June Meyers, who lives in Westwood. She followed my recommendation to take the DMV’s fail-safe eLearning course on her home computer. If you have a good driving record and qualify, eLearning is like a 45-minute driver ed course, with quizzes after each of seven sections. If you give the wrong answer, no worries. You can try again until you get it right.

But for Meyers, it was glitch after glitch, just as it was for lots of other readers.

Column: For drivers 70 and older, the road rage over DMV test questions continues

“It crashed three times,” Meyers, 90, said in a sassy letter to the DMV. She later took an in-person test after studying for a week, and like so many others, Meyers found a lot of the questions to be “as obscure and ridiculous as possible.” She passed anyway, but just barely.

I told Meyers I got a kick out of the last line of her DMV letter, in which she said, “I don’t have to return for four years. With any luck I’ll be dead.”

As for the “obscure and ridiculous” questions, some readers complained that although the DMV had promised me it made a list of about two dozen questions to throw out — including the aggressively absurd “what is another name for the hand-to-hand steering method?” — some of them were still on the test.

So what gives, DMV?

“Those questions were removed in the past few days,” DMV Deputy Director Anita Gore assured me late last week.

Regarding glitches in the eLearning system, Gore said Golden State readers had something to do with the tech crashes:

“Thanks to the eLearning publicity provided in part by your column, the system was temporarily overloaded, causing some users to get error messages,” she said. “Updates have been made to accommodate more volume.”

And efforts are continuing, Gore said, to direct more drivers (of all ages) to the eLearning course, which focuses on safe driving rather than on memorizing the kind of minutiae found on the written tests.

Column: Who’s more dangerous behind the wheel — drivers 70 and older, or 30 and younger?

“Knowledge is more valuable than the ability to take a written test,” said Gore.

That jibes with something DMV director Steve Gordon told me in our last conversation.

“I don’t know if there’s any strong correlation between being able to pass a written test and being a safe driver,” he said.

I’m clearing my throat here. OK, ready?

Those tests have been responsible for decades of stress, family arguments, and untold cheating attempts and sleepless nights for teens, their parents and everyone else who’s ever driven.

And they might have been a waste of time?

Actually, Gordon didn’t go that far, and there’s obvious value to testing people on the rules of the road (provided the questions are relevant). But as several readers have suggested, the truest test of whether you have any business driving is a behind-the-wheel test, because it’s possible to ace a written test and still be a menace in the driver’s seat.

But how could you get anyone to agree on an age — 70? 75? 80? — for mandatory driving tests?

And what politician would push the needed legislation, given the fact that older voters like to vote?

As I’ve said before, good drivers come in all ages and so do bad drivers. But many of us have seen our parents refuse to surrender the keys even when it’s obvious their vision, judgment and reaction time have slipped. (Currently in California, about 90,000 behind-the-wheel tests are administered every month to first-time drivers and those who might be having problems, including older drivers).

Letters to the Editor: It should be hard to renew a driver’s license. Sorry, seniors

Frank Cantor, who operates driving schools that offer refresher courses to older drivers in California and several other states, said judgment and neck mobility are among the challenges he sees. He brought up one student in particular.

“I gave my mom a refresher and she ended up hitting a pedestrian and didn’t even know it,” Cantor said from Florida, where he lives. “She was 75 and she was always a horrible driver. I taught her that if you can’t look over your shoulder, you have the side-view mirrors, and if you lean forward, you’ll catch the blind spot.”

That’s another pro tip. Don’t forget it.

When I asked Hirasaki, who devised the study guide, what she thought about mandatory behind-the wheel testing, her first words were: “Oh, please, no.” But Meyers, who fired off that dart of a letter to the DMV, said she would absolutely support the idea.

And Juarez stands ready to grab her keys and climb behind the wheel right now for a driving test.

“I would be glad to take it,” she said. “I’m not afraid.”

So how exactly did Juarez pass the written knowledge test so easily?

She said her daughter printed out four practice exams from the DMV website. Juarez took every one of them, then proceeded to the DMV office and focused on the task in front of her, just as she does when she’s behind the wheel.

“As I got older, I started learning that I need to focus on every job I’m doing. Focus on the job. Don’t get distracted,” Suarez said, especially after her late husband got Alzheimer’s and she drove the two of them everywhere, including Las Vegas and Palm Springs.

I thanked her for her help and said I hoped to meet her before renewing my license in October.

She said she was available any time, including the present.

“Where do you hang out?” Juarez asked.

Right here at my computer, trying to catch up on all the DMV emails.
